The East Rand is not one set of ground conditions. A pool in one town can sit near a pan with a shallow water table, another on undermined ground, another on reactive clay, and a few kilometres apart they need quite different handling.
The bigger towns have their own pages. This one is for everywhere else, including Brakpan, Nigel and the smaller suburbs and townships between them, and for the factors that apply across the whole region.
The Ground: One Region, Several Different Risks
Four things vary across Ekurhuleni and change how a pool repair should be approached: undermining along the old reef, dolomite under parts of the metro, clay-rich soils in places, and pans and wetlands that raise the water table nearby. Most stands have one of these, some have two, and very few owners know which applies to them until a contractor asks.
- Zoning is the starting point, not a guess. Ekurhuleni maps dolomite and undermining zones. If a job involves excavation or a new structure, checking the municipal zoning for your erf, or asking a geotechnical engineer, settles the question before anyone digs.
- Water goes somewhere different in each case. On dolomite a leak feeds the ground beneath you; near a pan the ground may push water back at an empty shell; on clay, wetting and drying moves the surround. Same leak, three different consequences.
- Some things are region-wide. Hail, mine dust in late winter and spring, and interruptions to the municipal supply affect almost every pool on the East Rand regardless of what is underneath it.

- Hail damage to solar panels, covers and heat-pump fins after summer storms, often found weeks later when heating stops working.
- Fine grey silt on the pool floor and filters that clog quickly through the dry, windy months.
- Pools left half-empty because a repair was started during a supply interruption and refilling took far longer than planned.
- Surrounds moving seasonally where clay or poor drainage under the paving shifts between wet and dry months.
The pool stock here
Very mixed. Mining-era family pools from the 1950s to the 1980s in the older towns, smaller pools on compact stands in the newer suburbs, plot pools on agricultural holdings, and complex pools in sectional-title developments. Few areas of the metro have one dominant type.
Check the zoning before anything is dug
For a pump swap or a resurface, ground conditions barely matter. For a new pool, a major renovation or a structural repair that involves excavation, they matter a lot, and parts of the East Rand fall within dolomite or undermining zones where the municipality expects more information before work goes ahead.
The pool company is usually not the party that confirms this. Ask the municipality about your erf, and on dolomite treat any leak as urgent rather than tolerable. See pool leak detection.
Dust season is a filtration problem
From roughly August to October, wind carries fine material off exposed ground and tailings across much of the region. It passes into the pool, loads the filter, and settles on the floor as a silt that the suction cleaner stirs up rather than removes.
Shorter backwash intervals, a filter medium in good condition and occasional vacuuming to waste handle it. A sand bed that has caked with fines needs replacing rather than backwashing harder. See pool filter repairs and filter sand.
Planning repairs around the water supply
Supply interruptions in parts of Ekurhuleni have been frequent enough that draining a pool is a decision to make carefully. An empty shell waiting days for a refill is exposed to sun, and in some ground conditions to pressure from below.
Ask whether the repair genuinely needs a full drain, whether partial lowering will do, and check current restrictions before starting. Many repairs to fittings and lines do not need the pool empty. See pool leak repair.
Access and Property Type in East Rand
Access ranges from wide mining-era stands with a driveway to the back, to compact suburban erven with a narrow side passage, to complexes and estates with gate procedures. On agricultural holdings the distance from the gate to the pool is the issue rather than the width.
When comparing quotes, check each has assumed the same access. A quote priced on driving to the pool and one priced on barrowing are not comparable, and the difference is not one contractor being cheaper.
Pool Repair Prices in East Rand
The ranges below are the regional market. What moves an East Rand quote is less the town than the stand: ground conditions that add testing or care, access, and whether the work has to be timed around water or weather.
| Job | Indicative range | East Rand notes |
|---|---|---|
| Leak detection survey | R1,500 – R5,000 | On dolomite or near a pan, a proper test is worth more than a quick look. Pay for line-by-line testing. |
| Pump repair | R800 – R4,000 | Dust-loaded water and long run times wear seals and bearings faster here. |
| New pump, supplied and fitted | R3,500 – R18,000 | Hail-damaged plant and dust-worn motors are common replacement triggers. Get repair and replace prices together. |
| Filter repairs / sand change | R1,100 – R5,000 | |
| Structural crack repair | R3,000 – R20,000+ | |
| Re-Marbelite | R450 – R700 /m² | |
| Fibreglass lining | R600 – R850 /m² | |
| Full renovation | R20,000 – R150,000+ | |
| Coping replacement | R450 – R1,200 /m | |
| Paving lift and relay | R250 – R550 /m² | |
| Monthly maintenance | R700 – R1,800 /month |
These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African pool industry pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and no figure here is a commitment by anyone.
Published pool pricing in South Africa varies widely — different 2026 guides quote ranges for the same job that differ by a factor of three — because pool size, surface area, access, the condition of what is already there, and how much preparation is needed all move the number. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual pool means anything.

East Rand Pool Repair FAQs
How do I find out if my East Rand property is on dolomite or undermined ground?
The municipality holds dolomite and undermining zoning information, and the building control or planning office can tell you what applies to a particular erf. For anything beyond a routine repair, a geotechnical engineer can interpret it for the specific site.
It only becomes important when a job involves excavation, a new structure or a persistent leak. For equipment repairs and resurfacing it does not change the work.
Why is there grey silt on my pool floor every spring on the East Rand?
In the dry, windy months fine dust blows off exposed ground and mine tailings across the region and settles in pools. It is too fine for many filters to hold, so it passes through and drops to the floor once the water is still.
Vacuuming to waste rather than through the filter removes it properly, and backwashing more often through the season keeps the filter from clogging. If the sand has caked with fines, it is due for a change.
Should I drain my pool for repairs during water cuts on the East Rand?
Only if the repair genuinely requires it, and only once you know refilling is realistic. A shell left empty for days in Highveld sun can crack its finish, and in some ground conditions it can be pushed by water pressure from below.
Ask the contractor whether a partial drain is enough, and confirm any current restrictions with the municipality first. Many repairs to skimmers, returns and lines can be done with the water still in.
Do you repair pools in East Rand yourselves?
No. This is a free service that connects East Rand pool owners with swimming pool repair companies working in the area. You describe the problem once, companies covering your area receive it, and they quote you directly.
The inspection, the quote and the repair are carried out by the company you appoint. Your agreement is with them.
How much do pool repairs cost in East Rand?
The variables are the same as anywhere: what has actually failed, whether anything must be excavated, whether the pool has to be drained, and the pool's surface area. Indicative market ranges are in the table above and on each service page.
No fixed price is published because pool repair scopes vary too much for a rate card to be honest. An itemised written quote after an inspection is what lets you compare properly.
